Bite-sized film reviews:

The Illusionist: I think I have to prefer this to The Prestige, because: LESS OVERWHELMINGLY BLEAK. Shot gorgeously, awesome score, I love Rufus Sewell always but I keep expecting Edward Norton to spit out a tooth or something. Also I should get around to reading the short story it's based on, because the author (Stephen Millhauser) taught at my college. I didn't take classes with him because I was a classics major and only an English minor, but still. Cool. :D

Up: Charming, adorable, funny, made me weep twice. I desperately want one of those collars for my own stupid dog. And yet I'm still sitting here in the middle of FEMINIST RAGE. Well, maybe not rage: as I said to Katie the other day, "It's not that I'm mad, Pixar, I'm disappointed." I'm disappointed that their first film with a female protagonist is going to be about a princess. Like Katie said, it feels like a crass marketing decision rather than organic story growth. Like they realized they should get around to doing a story with a girl and went "oh hey, girls like that princess stuff, right?"

Some girls do. Some girls don't. Some of us even like princesses but are fed up to the back teeth with the insistence that everything for girls has to be pink and princessy. I was tired of that when I was eight; I'm even more tired of it now.

Also, this doesn't deserve a review as I've already seen it, but a recommendation: don't watch the first half of The Pianist before going to work. It will RUIN YOUR DAY.
